There has to be a point when it is okay to discuss movies, including their ending. I mean can we not discuss the fact that Vader is Luke’s father when talking about Empire Strikes Back? I realize that people haven’t seen all these old movies but to not fully discuss them is ridiculous. I would say that you should avoid any movie spoilers that came out in the last 12-24 months, since people may have missed them, but after that it’s fair game. Also someone else pointed this out, you two really don’t seem to get the Rotten Tomato score thing. Captain America 2 has a 89% and you Anderson said that people needed to “calm down” about it. But it’s average score is 7.5/10 or 3.5 stars (roughy). The same goes for Bryan’s comment about Queen of Versailles It’s possible with RT to have a movie with a 100% score that has an average review of score of 6/10, a movie everyone recognizes as being “okay, good but not great.” Get it together guys.

The Tenenbaums house in The Royal Tenenbaums – Maybe it was the way it was shot but very unique & roomy.
The Chocolate Factory in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory – I’m going to count this since he actually lives here & enough said on why that would be awesome.

The score is not a grade, it is simply an average of how many positive reviews it received. If it’s at 50% it means half the reviews were positive, half were negative. It could be that those positive reviews were all incredibly glowing. Bryan saying that Queen of Versaille has a 93% rating and that he “would even go higher” is ridiculous and meaningless.
If you want to know what the “grade” is you need to look at the score below its Tomato Meter score, the “average rating”. This is on a scale of 1-10.

I read it when it came out, 10 or 15 years ago, I guess, and sometimes I wish I hadn’t. It’s impossible for me not to notice the things that Kunstler points out now. When I’m driving, it’s especially annoying. I thought I’d recommend the book, but with that warning, though, because it’s an easy read and entertaining. I didn’t think Anderson was wrong, at all, about architecture. He was talking about a different scale than Kunstler focuses on, but the idea is the same. Crap shacks are bad for the human psyche, big or small. Personally, I prefer to be in human scale buildings, but there are others that like oversized ones. I think Anderson was pointing out the difference between the Sheats-Goldstein house and a McMansion that has nonsensical pillars and punched out windows. Anyway, I love this topic and I’m glad it came up on The Film Vault.

The reason modernism has been such a massive failure — across all mediums, but especially in architecture — is that it fails on any level beyond a single episode. The Sheats-Goldstein residence is a prime example. Try to picture a neighborhood of those houses. It can’t work. The whole concept crumbles as soon as you realize that more than one person lives in a city, and that cities are also places where people work, play, eat, and — this is always forgotten in modernist urban design — walk.
Check out Jane Jacobs’s Life and Death of Great American Cities or James Howard Kuntsler’s Geography of Nowhere for brief primers on these ideas.

neighborhoods designed by modernist architects that are humane in scale and use. the houses are fantastic and the urban/suburban spaces work both publicly and privately.
zoning laws are to blame for the shittiness of american cities much more that modern design principles. as is the american public’s acceptance of a bland, inhumane designed environment and embrace of franchise over individual.

it is odd that so many people see modern design as cold and uninviting when one of the driving forces behind it was opening up living to one’s surroundings and letting in light.
you could do an entire top five with just lautner houses, garcia house from lethal weapon 2, the elrod house from diamonds are forever, jackie treehorn’s, the chemosphere from body double and others and silvertop in less than zero. lautner was the designer of more Class A fuckpads than probably anyone ever.
that being said, as much as i love modern architecture and its designers, i cant do anything but laugh at the fountainhead’s giant mountain of self absorbed bullshit.

Also, this show was probably the first time in history post-1980 when someone mentioned The Dakota (the Rosemary’s Baby apartment complex) without mentioning that John Lennon was shot and killed there, so well done guys (all insincerity intended).

One stars Dave Koechner and Pat Healy called “Cheap Thrills” where a rich dude offers a couple of ‘down & out’ more & more money to do increasingly morally/ethically challenging dares. The other is a Netflix special called “Would You Rather…” where a (yet another) wealthy rich guy kidnaps a group of less than fortunate individuals and offers them money to choose and perform tortures upon themselves & others.

I took this episode more from an architectural rather than a “personality” perspective as well. 2210 Astral Pl., the Deaton Sculptured house, Sheats-Goldstein Residence, etc. My first thought was the Sheats-Goldstein house. Gob damn… nice job Anderson. I’d f’ing blow you if I were even slightly gay. *I too love the whole “case study” house project in So. Cal. I live in Thousand Oaks and there are a couple (case study #28) including a Joseph Eichler tract that I think you would dig dig dig.
