I’m really surprised no one mentioned “The Wizard of Oz”. Isn’t every child scared of the tornado and the flying monkeys?
When I was in around 4th grade, my school showed “The Haunting” (1963) in our gym for halloween. Literally gave me nightmares.
I always say the scariest movie I’ll ever see is “Jaws”. Though not really a child (I was 12), no film could ever scare me as much. I’d get freaked out swimming in lake Michigan that summer…

Just a note on “de facto”. It means what’s actually, or “in fact”, the case instead of what’s dictated on paper or by law (which is “de jure”). An example would be if you believe that Dick Cheney was pulling the strings in the Bush Administration, then he was the de facto leader of the country while Bush was the de jure leader.

I’m baffled that no one has said Time Bandits yet. That poor British kid was sleeping peacefully when a giant face and a crowd of scruffy little people abducted him. I’m still sort of traumatized.

I loved being reminded of It’s Alive. I rented it as a kid entirely because of the VHS cover of the claws hanging out the side of a carriage. Also, it’s really funny how Anderson can’t seem to stop thinking about Valhalla Rising – it tends to have that effect. I personally love the film, but I’d never recommend it to anyone who doesn’t have a solid background knowledge of Norse mythology, or who isn’t interested in such things.

As a child growing up in Boston in the early 80’s, Channel 56 would offer Creature Double Feature every Sat afternoon. Vivid memories of great horror movies watched as a child (luckily during the light of day). But one movie in particular really bugged me out: War of the Gargantuans. Brown monster was the “good” monster, green was the evil one. Recalling the scene where the green monster is looking up from below the water still terrifies me.

Great podcast this week. The movie that scared me as a kid was “The Omen” and that cheesy TV movie about nuclear war called “The Day After.”

Great call with “The Day After.”
Completely forgot about that.
Absolute nightmare fuel to a young me. Impossible to sit through as an adult for completely different reasons.

Hey I’m not sure if you guys already did this one but you should do a top 5 fight scenes. I’m talking melee no firearms. And if you guys do end up doing it and the ending of Ong Bak 2 isn’t on one of your lists, I’m coming after you both. I know where you work…

In 1978 I was six years old and my parents, in a true ‘wtf’ were they thinking moment, took me to see Midnight Express. How I wish I would have had Anderson’s trucker hat to filter for me that night. I still give them grief about it to this day.

Happy Halloween to all.
Felt like I needed to share a horror film I just stumbled across on a netfuck’s instant recommendation. The Girl Next Door from 07, not the garbage comedy from 04. Crazy, and apparently somewhat true, story set in the “mind your own business” 1950s.

Bryan, yes ET totally fucked my shit up. Always has. Doesn’t help that my initials are ET and when I was little my dad told me ET was my brother. Thanks dad. Love the show guys!!!

What the hell. That is the list of the scariest movies from childhood? Maybe I am a different age group but although many movies freaked me out for a short time, the one movie that scarred me well into adulthood was by far Jaws. Corny now of course but as a sheltered child, who was not allowed to see hardly any movies and snuck over to a friends to watch it, it was burned into the dark recesses of my child mind. I would have panic attacks every time we went into any body of water most of my childhood. I live in Florida now and I am still nervous in the ocean. I love dark, twisted, wrong movies now and am so desensitized so it is very difficult to touch that nerve but Jaws did long-term physiological damage.

Wow! Anderson – you scare me. I can’t believe you mentioned “It’s Alive”. I was just trying to look that movie up recently on IMB. It came out in the 70’s and I vaguely recall an ice cream truck scene, but yeah – just the title alone scared me as a kid – reacting similarly to The Human Centipede. Poltergeist was crazy scary back when and really good and so was Creepshow. Again, Anderson you nailed it with the creature in the crate. Thanks for what you do guys.

Ghoulies. 1985. Also has a gnarly clown scene. Top five evil clown films? Love the clinking beers upon the unveiling of large marge as the first selection.

Logan your reading reminds me of 2nd grade when the stupid kids would read out loud and fuck up constantly. Try reading out loud on your free time before you embarrass yourself again. No sympathy.

I just had to share a couple movies my dad took me to see, that he definitely shouldn’t have. When I was 10 he took me AND A FRIEND to see Cape Fear, it scarred me for life. Also, Creepshow 2. For years afterward he would whisper “Thanks for the ride lady” to me before puting me to bed! To Bryan’s point, about transformation, the scene in Teen Wolf when MJF turns into the werewolf for the first time in the bathroom scared the bejesus out of me as a child. Great ep guys!

I don’t even recall the title of my earliest scarey movie, but I DO REMEMBER that Anderson’s Mother had to leave the theatre and walk me home…annoying child that I was! Apart from that, The Exorcist was my first and last ‘scarring’ experience in a theatre. I was urged (bullied) to attend by two male friends who claimed ‘it’ll be ok’…I disagreeD but succombed to pressure. I am still haunted by flashbacks! 🙂 That was the 70’s…

Bryan, GREAT call on that scene from Superman III. I saw that movie at a drive-in with my parents. The scene STILL freaks me the fuck out.

I thought Return to OZ would get more than a passing mention. It has Dorothy in a room full of heads in jars that come alive and scream at her. Holy shit. The wheelers also left me upset and concerned as a young child. “Parents” is also a creepy one, featuring a cannibalistic Randy Quaid. Very disturbing, though it was classified as a black comedy.

Did either of you see Gremlins when it came out? I was 6 and it was in the theater that was pretty scary. It was a double feature with this crazy movie where a guy drives a rocket car through a mountain and another dimension… I have no idea what that was but I remember it being pretty strange. I love the show. If it is not too much trouble you guys should list your top suggestions for the netflix streaming, Thanks.
James.

The Twilight Zone movie “wanna see something really scary?” scene with Dan Aykroyd scared the shit out of me when I was a kid. I just watched it on Youtube and it’s hilarious. Although my 3 year old was watching over my shoulder and I think he might be damaged now…

This would have been a perfect Top 5 for a younger or older guest. Lists were fine, but how about some views from outside the late 70s / early 80s?
Also, loved the strange After Disaster love making styles tangent.
