For a stretch he could do NO wrong-Halloween, the Fog, Christine, The Thing, Assualt on Precinct 13 and my personal favorite, Prince of Darkness. Even his experiments outside of his genre, Memoirs of An Invisible Man, Starman were good. I even eventually loved the corny and loving tribute to Mortal Combat and East/West attitude in Big Trouble in Little China! I still get sucked into it whenever it’s on.
But when IN the Mouth of Madness came out, I knew something had gone seriously wrong. I even went to Village of the Damned and sat through Christopher Reeve looking as confused as I was. But Escape from LA, Vampires and the worst- Ghosts of Mars are UNWATCHABLE. Before, his releases were ‘must sees’. Now I wait and expect the worst. I wont see the WARD and I’m not surprised he’s got nothing on the burner right now.
Wes Craven is still on my dance card!!!

Posted by Howard | February 13, 2012, 12:01 PMI just saw Resurrect Dead: The Mystery of the Toynbee Tiles based on Anderson’s raving Flickfession. It was a big let down. Not really an interesting “mystery” and there was no payoff what so ever. Shut Up Little Man was much better.
Otherwise, I love the podcast and look forward to it each week. Keep up the great work!

The movie was astoundingly beautiful, but that was all. It was 2 and 1/2 hours of staring at a beautiful naked women (cinematography), but never being able to have sex with her (story).

Like he said with Tree of Life, sometimes you’re just not in a mood to enjoy something, while other times you would enjoy it. Losing momentum of enjoyment by stopping a movie seems like a bad way to watch movies to me. It always irritates me when my girlfriend decides in the middle of a scene that she has to use the bathroom, instead of going between scenes, where we can pause more reasonably and not lose the momentum so much.
I love Tim Burton’s style, but his movies don’t have anything but style anymore.
I think that it might be better to watch all of a director’s movies after they’ve all been made, instead of seeing them as they come out. I find that with bands if I get their back catalog all at once I’m less picky about individual albums or periods than I am when I get a brand new album that doesn’t click with me. I’ve been watching Blake Edwards movies lately, and I’m more willing to watch the several crappy ones as I go through to the better ones later on.

As for the flickfession, to me, the major problem with “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” is the fact that it takes so long to conclude after the climax. The girl chases dude down, he wrecks, his car explodes– then, according to screenwriting (sniff) professionals the film’s loose ends should be wrapped up in a matter of a few minutes. In this case, the professionals are correct. There were three loose ends at the end of the movie: the girl’s relationship with the journalist/investigator, the fate of the guy who slammed Daniel Craig’s character and accused him of plagiarism, and the location/fate of the woman who went missing decades earlier.
I didn’t give a shit about the guy who accused Daniel Craig’s character of plagiarism ( I had almost forgotten about him because I NEVER cared about it), yet they dwelt on it FOREVER, and by the time they moved onto the details about the missing woman and the girl’s relationship with the investigator it felt like they were making a fourth act. In my mind, it went from a good movie to an average movie during its last thirty(?) minutes.

It kinda made me think of the similarly dated yet superior Far and Away. Hawk eye and his family running everywhere made me marvel at their cardiovascular fitness and reminded me of the Nordic track commercial parody from the Ben Stiller show.

Look at the trailer, you see the Space Jockey from Alien (the petrified giant alien in the chair of the derelict spaceship they get the alien from in the original film) rise up out of the floor, plus the inside of that ship is shown multiple times. Whether it will show the aliens at all is an open question, I believe they won’t appear in this one, but the plan is for at least one more film if this one does well (last I heard).
