  1. I’ve mentioned this before, but I LOVE BB and only started listening to TFV because of him. I actually could safely say I hated Anderson, most likely cuz I love Adam. Anyway, Anderson has grown on me, and tho I’m 50/50 with what he likes as far as movies, I vehemently agree with him on Fargo & Rules of Attraction. Spot on Andy! 😉

  2. I wouldn’t call Fight Club or Trainspotting dark comedies or they’d be on the list.

    5. Very Bad Things
    4. Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang
    3. Fargo
    2. Cable Guy
    1. American Psycho

  3. Bryan is absolutely wrong about Sucker Punch. It’s on par with Watchmen and Dawn of the Dead, and much better than 300. A beautiful film.

  4. Fight club is absolutely NOT a comedy. Bryan needs to go watch it again. I have seen this movie upwards of 10 times and besides those jokes Bryan mentioned, I can’t think of a comedy-funny moment. No comedy, black/dark or otherwise, could retain that label and include such vicious violence and death – including showing meatloaf’s head blown to hamburger in a realistic scene.

Any good story, even the darkest, should have funny moments- because that is a true reflection of life. That doesn’t make every good story a comedy.

  5. Disappointed no one mentioned my favorite dark comedy in recent memory, Four Lions.

It’s a bit lesser-known, but as far as pitch-black comedy goes, it’s hard to beat. The plot follows four bumbling mujihadeen-aspirants in the UK as they start from scratch to train and plan for a suicide bombing.

  8. I noticed Bryan ask where Abbie Cornish was hiding. Check out Somersault (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0381429/). I tweeted this to Anderson but I doubt he read the tweet.

  9. I really wish you guys would list your top 5 on this site instead of just listing all of the movies mentioned in the episode. I listened to your rationale for not doing it, and I think you are wrong. I listened to each episode, but then weeks later, I can’t remember which one of you mentioned which movie or where you ranked it, and looking at the list of all of the movies mentioned is pretty useless. I’m not going to listen to the entire episode again just to figure it out. If you still want people to listen to the episode, maybe you could wait a week and then just post the lists.

    • I respectfully say, you’re wrong, David. Their rationale for not listing the top 5 absolutely makes sense. If you’re smart enough, you’d write down the top 5 while listening to the episode. That’s the problem with us, modern people now — laziness. Everything is convenient, everything is right in our faces, which results to sense of entitlement and yes, laziness.

I’m sure, somehow, they’ve gotten more downloads and ‘listens’ since they’ve stopped listing their top fives. would love to get a confirmation from Logan’s records.

    • I agree with their rationale. If you find yourself forgetting, why no keep a document on your computer with the top 5s, or text/email them to yourself? They also do a recap at the end of the episode, so if you skip to the last 6 or 7 minutes usually you can get the full lists relatively easily.

  10. They absolutely should NOT make a sequel to The Truman Show. It ended perfectly. They spent the entire movie making you feel a mix of pity and disdain for all of the people who were so wrapped up in the life and fate of Truman, so when it ends and you want to know what’s next, you realize that you’re no better than all of the people who watched the fictional Truman TV show.

  11. I love the show and have warmed to Anderson over the seasons, but he was a raging asshole in this episode. It seemed like he was in a bad mood from the start and looking for a reason to walk off, until “Wag the Dog” brought him back.

  13. I have long thought Anderson has an oppositional disorder, now it is confirmed. There is no way he would say anything good about Southland Tales, if it weren’t for Bryan’s disdain for it. That was one of the worst and most disappointing movies I’ve ever seen. How could you screw up a movie with that cast? It was long, pointless, and boring. Please test my theory on this Bryan, rag on a really great movie that Anderson would usually like, and see what he says when he sees it.

The Box, not for everyone, but I really enjoyed it. Warning, very weird (as you’d expect from that director).

  14. Love Very Bad Things! Switched from AC’s Amazon to yours. Love your show and always look forward to it. Fuck the haters! I rarely watch movies and I still love your show!

Lastly, glad to hear news that BB’s tumor seems to be regressing. Albeit on a sad note, I lost my father to something similar. Glad you’re winning the fight!

    Keep it up guys!

PS: Logan, keep chiming in…and guys, keep shitting on him :).

  16. just watched “Death to Smoochy” for the first time since I watched it in a theater ten (??!!!!!?WTF) years ago…

It’s not bad. The thing that I noticed on my second viewing was just how god awful Jon Stewart’s “acting” was. It’s especially embarrassing when he is acting alongside Catherine Keener, who is one of the best actresses ever.
NO OFFENSE to James Babydoll Dixon if by some 1% chance he is reading this thing. I hope that you can milk the Daily Show for every penny you can get it from it ’cause the dude doesn’t have a film career to fall back on.

Also, as some of you guys have indicated, I’m surprised that Anderson didn’t choose “Election.”
Aaaaand “Fight Club” is not a dark comedy.

    Fin.

  17. The marital art in the Raid is Pencak Silat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pencak_Silat), and yes, I was banging my head on my keyboard when you couldn’t think of it Anderson.

    • The Raid was playing near me and I thought about going to it for a while. Anderson bringing it up made me go see it and was it ever good. Not much in terms of story or characters but the fight scenes were perfect. Even though you weren’t really attached to the characters the fights were intense and well done.

  22. at what point do Bryan and Logan switch places. Bryan interrupts Anderson constantly to contribute nothing. When Anderson mentions a movie that Bryan inevitably hasn’t heard of, he immediately turns to Logan. Brain tumor or not, let’s improve the Film Vault by making the BB for L switch immediately.

    • (in Teresa’s tone) “I disagree wholeheartedly!” be careful what you wish for. I like Logan but I’d bet my entire savings he’s not good enough to host TFV full time. no offense, Logie 🙂 I’m sure even he would admit to that. Bryan is the perfect host for this podcast and his chemistry with Anderson is like H to the two-O.

btw, I think only have $45 in my savings. lol

  24. Don’t watch The Box! It’s not that it’s not good, it’s worse because it’s a NOTHING! It’s a waste. I watched it and felt no emotion, no sympathy, no anticipation, no sense of anything. After I watched it, I thought to myself, “that was shit!” but it’s worse because it’s not just bad, it’s a ZERO on every level! I’m getting mad writing this…

  29. I believe the martial art used in The Raid is called Silat and it is badass. I studied a similar form called Kuntaw many years ago and heard about how deadly Silat was in the class. I think they used some of the filipino/indonesian martial arts like that in 300 as well.

  30. This episode cinches it, I have to have a Jim Carrey double feature. The Truman Show is so underrated.

Anderson was in rare form today, enjoy the Box! Savor it!

And Bryan, you call in the bet this week? The streak is OVER!
