Bryan: Please tell me you didn’t compare Jim Carrey to Eddie Murphy on Carollas’ show – way, way off. Carrey is sooooooo overrated and Murphy’s a genius without a decent script to capitalize on his comedy. The last one was Trading Places.

Posted by BW | March 21, 2013, 8:26 AMFirst time posting. I love the show. I love movies and you guys have a really refreshing lack of pretension and lack of self deception in the way you guys love and talk about movies. And watch ALL movies good and bad. I dig it.
The show has turned me on to some great movies like Sin Nombre, Badlands, and Ressurect Dead. But one thing, I gotta agree with Anderson, Bryan has got to learn that he can talk about a movie without spoiling it. It’s insane. A few movies I’ve watched as a result of the Film Vault were spoiled by Bryan, and really hurt my viewing experience. Like why say: “This film has a bleak ending! Bleak ending!” So now when i’m 3/4 of the way through the movie that’s ringing in my ears, and now i know what’s going to happen. Just be more sensitive to it because it’s super annoying.

The classic number one shoot out was the ending shoot out in High Noon. It set the standard for shoot outs. Completely out gunned, Gary Cooper was able to take out the bad guys with ingenuity and toughness as well as a little help from Princess Grace at the end. All time classic best shoot out by far. No better since.

Also, Children of Men is amazing. Those long shots are incredible. Plus, Clive Owen was fantastic. That scene where is in the foreground and in the background Michael Caine is talking about his lost child, incredible. Watch Clive’s subtle reaction.

Same with “Boogie Nights” IMHO. More like guns being fired scene than a shootout.
Crappy Lefty sludge “Children of Men” number 2 in Top 5 shootouts? No guns to fire back with…it’s yet another guns being fired scene.
“Shooting Aces” & “Heat” were great choices, “Blood Simple” was a quirky choice. Not seen “Boondock”.
Damn good picking Woo, bit ‘meh’ it’s the hipster American choice “Hard Boiled” & not “The Killer” but at least it was there…even if Anderson was rather snobby towards Woo being there.
But at least he was & number 1 too. Nice.
And to repeat…fuck “Children of Men” explicitly for being here, & generally for existing.
Fucking late in the day, Hong Kong rip-off “Matrix” in viewers list, but no Woo? No other HK Nu Wave?

But if there’s not one Hong Kong John Woo film (not fucking castrated “Face/Off”) on any of your lists (even mainstream known “Hard Boiled” will do…church fight in “The Killer” the preferred option) then it’s cyber slaps all round!
I understand having no Westerns (though that loses various greats and one utter essential in “The Wild Bunch”) but war films? Truth be told not many War films have great SHOOTOUTS…battles maybe, but rarely shootouts as such, so finding a great one would have been interesting.

The Raid Redemption was art with the most amazingly choreographed scenes I’ve seen. Dredd is what Hollywood does to great movies like The Raid Redemption.

The Judge Dredd books aren’t known for flashy martial arts or sophisticated plots. If you stray away from the books, you lose the die hard fans. If you try and stay too close, others will find the movie predictable and as you said a” standard shoot ’em up”.
Overall though, I’d say they struck a pretty good balance between the two. The Raid is definitely a good movie but I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s that much better than Dredd, it’s just a different kind of animal. It’s like comparing Watchmen to The Avengers, they’re both “superhero” movies but one is more story driven while the other is a ‘popcorn’ action flick.

Posted by Michael McParland | March 15, 2013, 6:44 PMAs per The Walking Dead, if you have the season 1 blu-ray, it includes a b&w version of the pilot episode. I’m thinking that perhaps Frank Darabont originally wanted to air the show that way but AMC thought it too risky. I say that because the blu-ray version of Darabont’s “The Mist” includes a “director’s vision” version of the movie which is pretty much the same as the original but in black & white which is how the movie was originally pitched.
The funny thing is that I find that in the case of The Mist, it being in b&w adds quite a lot to the overall atmosphere of the movie. If you liked the original, I HIGHLY recommend watching the black & white version if you haven’t already seen it.
