Bobcat was a great guest, but is nobody going to give him crap about putting The Rutles (AKA “All You Need is Cash”) on his list? I understand why B&A didn’t mention it, but none of you people are going to say it? I guess I have to: The Rutles is as much a documentary as Drop Dead Gorgeous is. There. I said it.

Posted by johnny queso | July 3, 2012, 12:35 PMWhen you were mentioning Punk documentaries in your also rants, Anderson and Bobcat made reference to “The Sound and the Fury”, but I think they meant to say “The Filth and the Fury” which is an awesome Sex Pistols doc. The former is a very tedious William Faulker novel I had to read in 12th grade.
And sombody else mentioned it already, but the bad looking Jim Morrison footage from “When You’re Strange” is really Jim from some unfinished movie project. This was right before he died and looked nothing like his former self.

this is real footage taken from morrisons experimental unreleased film “HWY: An American Pastoral”

Two great films that MUST be mentioned when discussing this topic:
“You’re gonna miss me” about Roky Erickson, frontman for the 13th floor elevators and an incredible solo artist in his own right. Much like the Devil and Daniel this film deals with a musician who’s basically a prodigy but who also deals with crippling mental illness, and what can potentially happen when it goes untreated. This is a fucking must on so many levels, for the story as well as the introduction to the music, they interview so many current musicians who talk about how influential and amazing this guys music was, Anderson you must watch this!
“Urgh! A Music War” in my opinion the best concert footage doc ever made. Filmed in the late 70s, the music featured is the foundation of punk rock. Opens with the Police, who suck, but then on to so many amazing performances by forgotten bands. Wall of Voodoo, Oingo Boingo, Steel Pulse, X, Magazine, the Cramps, this is a lengthy movie that I was not bored with for a second. Only problem is it’s pretty hard to find in it’s entirety: though you can go on YouTube, type in Urgh and you’ll get some of the greatest hits. Anyway, if you’re interested in exploring music from this period of Ramones-influenced raw rock n roll you can not go wrong with Urgh.
A few others:
Another State of Mind about the punk rock cross country tour of Social Distortion, Youth Brigade and others, you often hear punks refer to this as the best punk doc ever made though I think it’s a little overrated. Still worth watching.
The Unheard Music, the X documentary. One of the best bands ever, you hear Adam talk about them from time to time, he even interviewed John Doe not long ago. This film is a great intro to the band and their music.

Also, your list was solid for once, and I especially liked the inclusion of “Standing in the Shadows of Motown” and “Live Forever.” The tragic part of “Standing in the…” is that almost all of those guys died within a few years of the filming of it, including Johnny Griffith, who died just a few hours before he could watch its premiere in Detroit. I love that they made a film to honor those guys before they left this world.
I’m surprised that “Hype!” didn’t make anyone’s list and wasn’t even mentioned in “honorable mentions.” Awesome doc.

I wasn’t surprised to see that it didn’t get mentioned cuz it had like no release, but it’s a really fascinating movie. Half of it is about the early-90s Seattle scene, focusing on the punk group The Gits. The other half is true crime, focused on the brutal murder of The Gits’ frontwoman Mia Zapata. It’s got all the usual rock-doc band drama/wild shows/candid interviews/etc. that one would expect, plus the extremely compelling second act of trying to make sense of/come to terms with/solve an unexpected, horrible crime. Anderson, you would probably like this one.

Adam’s lost his ability to listen to guests, and let them talk, and he believes he’s the funniest person living, even though he constantly repeats just about everything he says, and even tells us ahead of time that everything he says he’s said a thousand times. I wish that, at least, Bryan and Anderson would have guests every week, or even better, that Bryan would do his own show with guests, and not have to focus on movies. As well as doing this show, of course.
Bobcat’s movies have been great, though Windy City Heat didn’t really thrill me.
