Right, and Christopher Nolan should come from behind the screen to tell you that Interstellar was part of a larger experiment, and the movie wasn’t really real. It’s all a computer in a black hole man. The master filmmakers of this era should rightfully be held to high standards. When somebody tells you how they feel about a movie, and it makes you mad, there’s usually some truth to their argument.
What makes a movie great as opposed to good? Predator was not a great movie, but I watched it over and over again because it was Predator. You know what fuck that, Predator was better than Citizen Kane. Love you all, happy holidays. 🙂

When these guys stated that “In a World…” was one of the best movies of all time I was angered because it was so obscenely wrong that it seemed like they were shitting on the art of cinema as a whole. Many other people were angered because they wasted their time on it.
“What makes a movie great as opposed to good? I love crap.”
“Captain America: Winter Soldier” (2014) is my favorite comic book movie of all time. It’s a great comic book movie. But it’s not a great movie. Just as psychology is in a pre-paradigmatic stage and isn’t considered a serious science by many people, the comic book movie genre is in its infancy. Despite people’s claims that “The Dark Knight” revolutionized the genre, there isn’t a thing in the second Captain America film that is reminiscent of it. What makes a film “great” to me? It revolutionizes its genre (the first couple of “Dirty Harry films”), and/or it states something deep and meaningful, (“Dr. Strangelove”) and it has a great STORY that people will remember it for decades or centuries to come.
Last year, “The Wolf of Wall Street” definitely qualified as a truly great film to me.

Him bashing Inherent Vice has literally no effect on me as it did bryan, with his moans of disappointment. I just don’t care what someone who gives NO credit to Interstellar thinks about a movie man, ad the Master was fucking awesome. I will concede that the trailer for Inherent Vice DOES look like a Big Lebowski rip to the nines but the Big Lebowski was awesome too.

I just noticed that when they noted that it had an 8 on imdb that I was like “of course, what does anderson know, he hated interstellar.” But the whole reason I replied to my own comment is to say that I myself am very hot/cold on PTA. I HATED Magnolia and thought Punch Drunk love was very subpar where There Will Be Blood is one of the greatest films ever made and honestly Boogie Nights is up there too. I would definitely say he hits more than he misses. btw Anderson, ive been a fan of yours since 2003-4 when you used to drop “you can’t arcpha, you can’t articulate yourself any better than that” so no love lost brother

He is incredibly opinionated but him loving or hating a movie tells me nothing about whether it is good or not. The fact that he said The Master was a bad movie gives me faith that I won’t share his opinion about Inherent Vice either. Everything is such an extreme reaction with Anderson, it can be kind of frustrating.

I saw it at a midnight screening at New Beverly Cinema last week. I was already tired when I entered the theater. I didn’t endure beyond the one hour mark. When I walked out on it I also thought, “it might be time for PTA to split from Joaquin.”
Think about the general disinterest that everyone seems to have toward that film right now. It’s really startling because it was supposedly one of the most anticipated films of the year.
2014 had a few good movies– nothing was GREAT, though. Nothing.
