  1. First one I thought of when I saw the title was Willem Dafoe thumb amputations in The English Patient.

Second one I thought of was Chucky using a voodoo doll to snap the femur of his witch doctor mentor in Child’s Play (although he is later killed in the scene so not sure it counts).

As mentioned previously, Darryl Hannah’s second eye-plucking in Kill Bill is a worthy consideration.

Niki Lauda’s horrific burns and treatment in Rush were also tough to watch, especially knowing it was a true story.

Illeana Douglas having a big piece of her cheek bitten off by Robert Deniro in Cape Fear (which he then spits out) was also pretty horrific.

  5. Eye plucking in Kill Bill
Also, I kill bill vol.1 “you can have your lives, but your limbs are mine”. Lots of non lethal there.

  10. Chong Li busting that guys shin in Bloodsport. Robert DeNiro against Sugar Ray Robinson in Raging Bull. Thug getting nailed in the face with pool ball in Carlito’s Way. Harry’s shot up arm in Requiem for a Dream. Frank was charming at first but didn’t live up to the greatness Anderson claimed. Tusk was awful. Bryan will hate it once he gets assigned.

  11. I don’t think Bryan gave his #5 for this episode. I listened back and still couldn’t find it, unless Bushemi shooting his face off in Fargo was it?

    Anyways,
    – the arm wrestling or hand melting scenes from The Fly
    – head carving scene from Inglorious Basterds
    – self “abortion” from Prometheus
    – Dentist scene from Marathon Man
    – torture scenes from Ichi The Killer and Audition

  12. Left out two of the most important injuries in scifi. Darth lightsabering off his sons hand, and obi wan lightsabering off anakins arm and leg leaving him to burn and effectively inducing his transformation into one of the best villains of all time.

  13. I just watched “Black Sea” based on Anderson’s recommendation. I enjoyed that film more than I enjoyed almost all of the Academy Award nominees for “best picture.” I also loved Dom Hemingway, which is not designed for mainstream crowds. Admittedly, I usually hate films that fall under the “non-mainstream” category because they are just surrealistic dog shit.

    • It is time to crown Ben Mendhelson (sp?) as the new king of creepy. After Animal Kingdom, Killing Them Softly, Place Beyond the Pines, and now Black Sea, he is taking Steve Buscemi’s place as the ugly scummy dude in Hollywood. He is so damn good at it too.

I agree completely. There is something about his facial expression that always seems as if he isn’t all there. If he walked past me I would look over my shoulder two or three times to make sure he wasn’t doubling back to stab me or something. He isn’t nearly as …. aesthetically challenged as Buscemi, though.

  14. Burt Reynolds’ broken femur hanging out in Deliverance.
Spider getting shot in the foot in Goodfellas.
Hammer to the knuckles in Casino.
All the shit that happened to RoboCop.
Arrow in the leg and subsequent attempt at removal in Blue Ruin.

  16. Anderson, it’s Scoot McNairy, not Scott McNairy. You’ve been calling him Scott for the last two weeks.

    • I said the same thing last week. I don’t think they read this forum that often. In his defense, no one should be named Scoot, I believe it’s not his real name anyway.

  19. When Dicaprio is pounding the table in Django Unchained, and really cuts his hands on the broken glass on the table, and keeps acting is a great injury scene. A great performance from a great actor.

  20. Badger hair brushes are made with real badger hair. As I understand it, the hair is a byproduct of butchering badgers for human consumption in China.

  22. A possible Top 5: Great movies that I avoid due to a particular scene which ties into this Top 5 – “Million Dollar Baby”. Won’t spoil the movie even though Brysn would say something like this to justify it “But it happened with on the screen!!” (Appropriate high pitched inflection you all know only too well.)

  24. I appreciate that you did not like Ida but from your review it sounded like you did not understand it. It is about the history and politics of Poland from WWII until the early 1960’s (from the nazi occupation to the Russian communist occupation). Ida was born to a Jewish family in hiding during WWII. While they hid a polish family was living in their home. After the Russians invaded the polish family would have had to return the home to Ida’s family. Instead they killed the family. Ida, an infant, was the only survivor so they took her to the convent and the nuns raised her as Anna and hid her story from her. Before taking her vows Mother Superior told Anna(Ida) to meet her aunt, the only surviving member of her family, and find out about who she was. The aunt was a high ranking member of the communist party and had fought for the communist cause doing some pretty horrible things in the name of communism. Obviously there is a lot more to the story but maybe that helps you understand why there is no one named Ida in the IMDB summary of the movie.

    • Are you really trying to explain the historical context of this film to a bald asshole who spent the whole discussion wondering if the lead actress was old enough to lust after & then started his next review of an African documentary with “we saw a movie about a bunch of monkeys, and also some gorillas”.

Bryan has definitely ventured into Seinfeld “bubble boy” territory where we must all weigh our pity for his plight against the fact that he’s become (or perhaps he always was) a truly obnoxious, uncouth putz.

Fuck me for continuing to tune in.

      • Listening to their review it became clear to me that they did not have a handle on recent european history. I can understand if they didn’t get “drawn into” (I believe those were their words) the film, but it is impossible to be drawn in if you don’t have even a basic understanding.

That said you are correct. I am not sure why I bother. I don’t think they care and I am sure that most of their audience couldn’t care less.
