  1. You guys really pull some great, thoughtful, and sharp choices for this podcast! My hat’s off to Bryan in particular who is able to defend his choices without transforming into a raging dick. Anderson tends to resort to talking louder or being aggressively abrasive when he wants to be clever and disagree. Thanks, Bryan, to making this podcast listenable! If you ever get another co-host, I think the podcast will raise to the next level. Keep kicking ass!

  3. I saw on Moonshiners that “bootleggers” does mean they hid the liquor in their boots.

  4. Shane Carruth; writer, director, and all around ‘auteur’ of the movie, calls it ‘PrImer,’ as in Primer paint. My take is that the first characters in the film are the ‘prime’ characters, after which the movie deals with *spoiler alert* their ‘doubles.’

  5. I’d hate to be a burster of bubbles, but the mattress man outtake on Punch Drunk Love features a stuntman doing the fall – Philip Seymour Hoffman is spliced in before and after it…

  6. It’s too bad there was a lack of chick mentions. What about Cameron Diaz in Any Given Sunday? She was a straight up bitch in that role.

  7. I’m a longtime listener, but The Film Vault is far and away the most frustrating podcast I listen to. You guys just get so much information wrong that sometimes it feels like work listening to it. Try harder.

  8. Wow is Submarine bad and I’m 40 minutes in – could it get worse? I’m likewise Welsh and while the cinematography was great – beautiful scenes of Wales and lights on the water, it could not save the movie. A foiled movie choice Anderson. The shot of Stiller on TV just made me not like him more.

  9. The podcast is really growing to the next level – congrats. The more frequent guests aligned with a topic cuts through the trebly timbred bickering that has a 2-3 episode tolerance threshold. Content is improving as well: learning about great stuff on instant, forgotten, and just coming out. Although not your charter, love hearing thoughts about limited releases at the Landmark. Thanks!

  11. Loved the show today guys. Great list. Well, I thought the movie you picked for your number 2 was…. well, number 2, but I think PTA is super overrated.

Bryan, if you are a fan of Stephen Tobolowsky, there is a great documentary that I think both of you would like called “Starz Inside: The Face Is Familiar”. It is only about 50 minutes, but highlights character actors. It is on Netflix disc only, but a fun documentary. It interviews Stephen Tobolowsky, Michael Madsen, Joan Cusack and many more. I don’t remember if you have mentioned it before on the show, but is worth checking out if you haven’t seen it.

  12. The Mattress Man commercial in Punch Drunk Love was staged. It was a spoof of an actual commercial, here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oGelfTwJWPI.

Don’t know how Philip Seymour Hoffman took that fall, but it was intentional.

  16. For the love of God please put your hipster glasses away and stop praising that pile of garbage Drive. I normally never agree with Carolla but that movie was a steaming pile of crap.

    • I was just going to state… for god’s sake…
if you’re going to praise anything about that pile of shit
      PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE
stop praising Albert Brooks’ performance– praise the style of the movie or the tone or whatever gold nuggets we can pick out of the excrement. But stop with the “ALBERT BROOKS AND RON PERLMAN– MY GOD!”
It’s bad, bad, bad acting. That first scene in which those guys are conversing in the diner looks like something that was taken directly from a film school short film with two burnt-out L.A. actors who need work– even free work. That was my honest reaction to it when I watched it in a theater.
