Both of them think that this is not a spoiler since it happens “at the beginning”. It this a commonly held assumption by most people?

If it isn’t acceptable to publicly discuss events that occur early on in a film, then what would it be acceptable to discuss? General tone? Mise en scène? It seems to me that unless you are going to try to argue that no one should ever discuss any aspect of a film if they suspect that they may be within earshot of anyone who is interested in seeing it but hasn’t yet done so, then you have to concede that it is probably unavoidable (and also more-or-less acceptable) to openly discuss the plot set-up of movies. Anything less than that would simply serve to preemptively shut-down any and all intelligent film discussion.

It’s an interesting point but I still think a spoiler from the beginning of a film is just as bad as one from the middle of the film. This is the thing I have issue with. Not that a film should or shouldn’t have plot points revealed but that a spoiler from the beginning of a film is a not something that can be given away without ruining the experience of watching the film for the first time.
If I hear them talking about a film I’m interested in and haven’t seen I’ll listen and then fast forward when I hear things being revealed. When I hear Bryan talking about a film I haven’t seen and wish to watch I’ll FF immediately until I hear Anderson’s voice dominating letting me know that the review is over.
I always found it odd that critics would relate the plot of the film in its entirety (like Bryan did with Manchurian Candidate) as part of the review. Needless to say I never read a review before seeing a film and after seeing a film I’m much less interested in general reviews and will read people I like. Back in the day it was Pauline Kael from the New Yorker magazine.

A lot of time I lose track of what movie you are on or what movie you are talking about because you drift off into something that doesn’t relate to anything relevant about the movie or movies in general. I like the show but sometimes it just turns into useless bickering that takes me out of the show entirely.

If you just want to find out the movies on their list just fast foward to the end where they recap and go over also rans. Most podcasts have hosts that tend to discuss things, and if you are “getting lost” lay off the weed while listening. I’m pretty sure that before each pick they say something along the lines of; “Number 2 on my list of movies that blah, blah blah is ….”
No wonder Anderson doesn’t read these comments. It’s my first time reading them and I can’t believe the shit you people complain about.
