There’s no reason to believe it was any less random or unsolicited in relation to Brandt than it was in relation to Duder. I don’t even think it was intended so much to be a real offer (not saying she isn’t crazy enough to follow through or whatever) just something shocking and attention-grabbing to say. In general, great decision to dedicate a top-five to PSH given the circumstances. It was also a cool opportunity to bring up movies never mentioned before on the show, something very welcome after listening for many years. I wasn’t too concerned w the specific lists or placements, just saw it as an opportunity to dip into a variety of his performances and the movies he was in. One more thing: I usually like Anderson’s take on stuff even if I don’t fully agree with his conclusions, BUT, I was totally surprised by his thoughts on Frozen. I’m totally fine w not liking it, even though it was one of my favorite animated movies in a while. But, I think it was very specifically fresh, subversive and surprising. (I won’t mention specific details but general comments that are light-medium Frozen spoilers ahead) He discussed the tired way in which the younger princess meets that guy at the beginning, but being tired was the point. Later in the movie there’s a big twist in her love story that worked as commentary on that earlier stuff and the played-out love story tropes. Also, the older sister’s story was totally void of any love story and that her struggle was kind of a fresh, serious take on her being a “misfit” and having a secret she was ashamed of. Some critics/viewers interpreted that as her literally being gay or at least symbolic of coming-out struggles. I totally see that interpenetration but don’t think it necessarily has to be specific sexual orientation vs just shameful secrets, not belonging stuff, Either way tho, sort of a fresh conflict spin — at least for Disney films. And beyond all that, the fact that the central relationship wasn’t romantic at all, but about sisterhood differentiated it from a lot of standard Disney fare. Still, solid TFV episode.

The continuous metaphor of closed doors and open gates resonates more through repeat viewings. This was a smartly written, perfectly vocalized Disney movie. I didn’t think they had it in them without Pixar.

there were 2 PSH movies that didn’t get nearly enough love.
Synecdoche, New York is a brilliant masterpiece that relies entirely on PSH. A film that breaks down and defines the ego and purpose of all art. I am surprised that both of our hosts don’t even like the film.
The second (and very different) its the EXTREMELY underrated MI3. I understand that Bryan and Anderson are not big action movie guys but if you are this is one of the best, with PSH playing one of the best villains of all time. It suffered because Tom Cruse was acting all crazy when it came out, plus its the third in a trilogy so i am sure it gets pre-judged as bad but not only is it the best Mission Impossible movie its one of the best action movies ever.
5 stars for both IMHO

I figured Anderson would at least have it on his list or also-rans. The movie isn’t great, but as per usual PSH’s performance is mesmerizing.

His embarrassment shows how much Brandt is committed to staying in character, which is why he tries as hard as he can to speak positively even when spoken to so vulgarly. That is what makes it funny!!!COMPLETELY agree he is by far the funniest character in this movie. I saw it right when it came out on video when I was like 12 and I have always thought his character was so funny. At that age, I didn’t know that someone could be funny by not trying to be funny, it blew my mind. Jim Carrey = comedy to me, I had no idea there was such a thing as subtle comedy until I saw PSH as Brandt. In a way, it is almost his best role, so perfectly executed. But you can say that about all his best roles, it is what made him so amazing. This is a tough one, he really was the best actor of our generation.

He is such a sweet guy that worships the Big Lebowski, and would never insult him by watching her movies. He was clearly embarassed by her because he is such an uptight guy, which is why he immediately tried to usher the Dude away after she said that. If he was in to watching her, he would have hovered to see what the Dude said. Anderson is totally right on this.
